Catalogue Note

The present table is inspired by the Palladian-revival designs promoted by Lord Burlington's protegé, William Kent and his circle. Particularly close parallels can be made with an anonymous drawing of a side table circa 1740, illustrated in Peter Ward Jackson, English Furniture Designs of the Eigthteenth Century, 1984, pl. 35.  Further comparison can be made with elements featured in William Kent's design for a side table, published in J. Vardy, Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. William Kent, 1744, pl. 41 and patterns for a group of tables, illustrated in William Jones, The Gentleman or Builder's Compainion, 1739 (See Elizabeth White, Pictorial Dictionary of 18th Century Furniture Designs, 1990, pp. 262-263).
