octofoil, on four panel supports, screw fitting on underside, the centre engraved with a coat-of-arms within a baroque cartouche



The arms are those of Maxtone of Cultoquhey, co. Perth, impaling Grundie of Thurgarton, co. Norttingham.

This Maxtone, as yet unidentified, was clearly a kinsman of the Maxtone family, one of whose ancestors, Robert, had fallen at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, and which, in 1821, was described as having been in possession of Cultoquhey 'for five or six centuries . . . without increase or diminution.' (An Account of the Principal Pleasure Tours in Scotland, John Thomson & Co., 2^nd edition, Edinburgh, 1821, p. 117). The estate was eventually sold by Anthony Maxton Graham, 16^th of Cultoquhey (1900-1971), in 1955.
