Description
- Henry Chabaud, London, 1804
- 8.5cm, 3 1/4 in wide
rectangular, engine-turned within chased ribbons and flowers, wavy rims, interior with later inscription
Provenance
According to the Latin inscription, the box was presented by a grateful Grand Duke Alexander of Russia (the future Alexander II), to the vice-chancellor of Oxford, Ashhurst Turner Gilbert, on 1 May1839. Alexander and Prince William of Orange had received honorary degrees from the university followed by a banquet given by the vice chancellor. The Reverend A.T. Gilbert (1786-1870) was ordained in 1815, becoming principal of Brasenose, Oxford, in 1822. He was vice-chancellor of the university from 1836 to 1840, then Bishop of Chichester in 1842, a position he held until his death.
