Catalogue Note
The firm of Clay was established in 1772 by Henry Clay, a leading japanner and papier-mâché manufacturer who worked at various times for George III, Queen Charlotte and the Prince of Wales, as well as other distinguished patrons including Horace Walpole and the Dukes of Bedford and Northumberland.
Originally based in Birmingham, Clay transferred his business to London around 1785 and despite his death in 1812, the firm continued to trade from King Street, Covent Garden, under his name until to 1822 when the business was moved to Fenchurch Street before closing in 1860.
