Condition

The porcelain is in good condition. The enamel cover has a number of very fine typical haircracks but is in otherwise good condition.

Catalogue Note

The present example appears to be part of a series of boxes molded with symbols of various arts and sciences.  A bonbonnière emblamatic of geography and astronomy molded with a compass, sextant, telescope and chart, also from the Collection of Otto and Magdalena Blohm, was sold at Sotheby's, London, July 4, 1960, lot 34, and is illustrated by G. E. Bryant, The Chelsea Porcelain Toys, Col. Pl. 49; and another with musical instruments, from the Irwin Untermyer collection, is illustrated by Yvonne Hackenbroch, Chelsea  and other English Porcelain Pottery and Enamel in the Irwin Untermyer Collection, pl.68.
