A pair of attractive Dutch Neoclassical painted canvas wall panels West Frysian, last quarter 18th century

Both paintings have been relined and are under a slightly yellowed varnish. The paint surface on both has been generally well preserved and there is nice retention of detail throughout. Both paintings have several old, crudely repaired tears scattered throughout compositions. The painting with the donkey in the painted medallion (illus. on left in catalogue) has a very large repaired diagonal tear at the left side, which is visible in the printed catalogue image and in the online image. There are other old discolored retouches scattered here and there on both paintings. Overall, for paintings of this size, they have survived fairly well and could even be hung in their present state. However, they would benefit from a sensitive restoration and a re-addressing of the old, crudely applied restorations, which would greatly improve their appearance.
