Catalogue Note
Pierre-Joseph Redouté was the greatest botanical artist of the golden era of botanical illustration. The Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, commissioned Redouté to paint an extensive series of paintings of the ornamental flowers in her lavish gardens at Malmaison. The four plates here are "Ixia à fleurs vertes," "Ixia jaune et brun," "Morée à longue Gaine," and "Agave en Epil".
