Description

  • each: 48.5cm. high, 1ft. 7¼in.

Condition

Some minor rubbing to gilt-bronze and bronze. Some minor nicks to the bobeches. Some of the joints are slightly loose and would benefit from tightening up. There is a variation in the design of the bobeches, some of which may well be replaced. The raised central nozzle is different to the rest and is slightly crooked. Although it is period, it may well be a replacement together with the upper section of the ring above the tails of the dolphins. There is some very minor chips to the marble bases. An unusual model in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

Comparative Literature:
Igor Sychev, Russian Bronze, Moscow, 2002, p. 99 for a pair of candelabra by C. Galle, in Pavlovsk Palace, with similarly cast candlenozzles and candlearms in the form of dolphin heads to those on this pair of candelabra.

One should bear in mind that Friedrich Bergenfeldt , (1768-1822), the celebrated Russian bronzier active in the early years of the 19th century, often reproduced the same motifs as Galle and the casting of the present pair of candelabra is reminiscent of his work.
