Description

  • each: 30cm. high; 1ft.
each with a recumbent sphinx on a shaped plinth with scrolled corbels terminating in fluted toupie feet, the opposing end with a baluster urn and cover

This pair of chenets with recumbent sphinxes are based upon two designs attributed to the sculptor Nicolas Coustou (1658-1733), reputedly for lead sphinxes which stood on the terrace of the Royal Pavilion at Marly, now in the Cabinet of Drawings at the Stockholm Museum.

Condition

Colour of gilding less pinkish and more golden and attractive than in the catalogue photograph. Old minor marks, scratches and pitting commensurate with age. Attractive detail to casting. The gilt-bronze is slightly dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to taste. The finial on the baluster urn of one shows evidence of resoldering. An attractive model in overall good original condition.
