Description

  • 22.5cm. high, 43cm. wide, 33cm. deep; 9in., 1ft. 5in., 1ft. 1in.

Condition

The casket which holds the panels is 19th century. The panels are loose. Splits to veneers. One side plaque with split. One bracket foot lacking.

Catalogue Note

The present panels relate to a pietre dure panel which is signed Baccio Cappelli  active during the reign of King Gian Gastone (1671-1737)., illus. Anna Maria Giusti, op. cit. pl. 164. The floral designs are characteristic of the designs of Giovanni Battista Foggini.

The various marbles in the panels comprise amongst other stones,  chalcedony from Volterra, jasper from the Alsace region and Sicily, and lapis lazuli.

Comparative Literature:
Anna Maria Giusti, Paolo Mazzoni, Annapaula Pampaloni Martelli, Il Museo Dell`Opificio Delle Pietre Dure a Firenze, 1978, pl. 146-153 illustrate pietre dure panels of almost identical form to those in the present lot.
