Catalogue Note

The mark is that of the château d'Eu at the time of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans before becoming king of France

The château was owned by the grandson of Louis XIV and Mme. de Montespan, who was known as the Comte d'Eu and towards the latter years of the 18th century the house passed to the Orléans branch of the Bourbon family, to whom it was restored after the Napoleonic era and in whose possession it remained at least into the 20th century. In 1821, upon the death of his mother, Louis-Philippe inherited the château and set about restoring it.
