Description

naturalistically carved around the exterior to imitate a section of bamboo, the mid-section with a raised double-fillet to depict the node, with swaying foliage borne on a smaller bamboo trunk, the foot carved with a thin beaded border, the base plug carved to accommodate the somewhat irregular section, with areas of age cracks on the rim and exterior, very fine patina throughout

Provenance

Collection of Peter Boode, Esq., London.
Sotheby's London, 1st November 1972, lot 220.

Condition

The brushpot is in good overall condition with very nice patina throughout. There are expected vertical age cracks on the surface corresponding to the grain of the ivory, with a network of age cracks following the shape of the flat mouth rim. The base plug is a later replacement and the central nerve of oval shape is now missing, approximately 3/4 inch long. The base plug is fitted to accommodate the slightly irregular section of the vessel and was secured by two small circular pegs on opposite sides of the foot. The underside of the foot with two small circular holes, original to the irregular curvature of the tusk, adjacent to a 1/4 inch wide semi-circular shallow chip.
