the menacing figure standing with feet flexed and hips thrust out to one side, one hand clenched tightly into a fist by the waist with the other held up in halting motion, wearing a short fluttering skirt, his face with a fierce expression, stand (2)

Condition

Overall wear to the gilding, particularly to the back, elbows, hands and chest; some visible in the catalogue illustration. The color of the gilding is not as saturated as the catalogue illustration. The figure is attached to the base, underside of feet not inspected.

Catalogue Note

The present figure is a fine example of the rounded volumes and movement characteristic of Tang dynasty sculptural style. It would originally have formed part of a small portable votive altar set. Compare a related small gilt-bronze lokapala figure of approximately the same height and style and therefore possibly from the same group, illustrated in Ausstellung chinesischer Kunst, Berlin, 1929, fig. 304.
