Description

standing dressed in a plain robe draped around the shoulders and leaving the feet bare, with his right hand raised in abhaya mudra, his left in varada mudra, framed by a mandorla and on a splayed squared pedestal inscribed at the sides and back; together with: a miniature gilt-bronze figure of a Buddha similarly dressed and standing on a squared pedestal (2)

Exhibited

On loan to the Brooklyn Museum, New York (1970-2009).

Condition

The larger gilt-bronze figure: The tip (1/4 inch) of the mandorla has broken off and was replaced. The base has replaced sections, particularly the front two legs, meaning that some of the inscription is later added. The figure shows overall traces of wear to the gilding consistent with its age. The smaller gilt-bronze figure: This is in good overall condition with expected wear to the gilding, and some malachite encrustation on the head.
