Description
each of rectangular form, finely cast and pierced to the front face with a rectangular panel enclosing a partially recumbent buffalo, one beast facing to the left, the other to the right, the reverse with two simple loops for suspension

Condition
The plaques are in very good overall condition with the exception of wear to the gilding at the edges and raised areas. The backs have light malachite encrustation.

Plaques of this size and shape were cast with depictions of various animals; for example see several plaques containing animals including deer, tigers, buffalos, and dragons, illustrated in M. Rostovtzeff, The Animal Style in South Russia and China, Princeton, 1929, pls XXV-XXVIII; and another cast with a buffalo, sold in these rooms, 11th December 1984, lot 37.
