of lobed octagonal form with indented rim, brightly enamelled to the interior with the arms of Dom Jose Ribeiro de Fonseca Figueiredo e Sousa, all within elaborate leafy strapwork borders

This rare chargers is in very good overall condition with the exception of a 2cm., long firing hairline to the rim, two rim frits, some minor firing imperfections including iron-spot glaze imperfections and light enamel and glaze scratches.

Dom Jose Ribeiro de Fonseca Figueiredo (1690-1752) was created the Bishop of Oporto in 1739, under the name of D. Frei Jose Maria da Fonseca e Evora. A tureen and two dishes painted with these arms are illustrated in Nuno de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Chinese Empire, Oporto, 1988, pp. 87-89; a stand from the same service was sold in these rooms, 7th November 2007, lot.340.
