Description
comprising a figure of Damo, dressed in loose-fitting robes, standing on swirling waves, a figure of Zhenwu, seated in a horseshoe-shaped chair draped in an animal skin, a figure of a Buddhist acolyte, seated holding a fly whisk, and two figures of Guanyin, both seated, the smaller figure holding a ruyi sceptre, impressed mark
Provenance
The acolyte figure, Roger Keverne Summer Exhibition, 1999; the larger Guanyin figure, Robert McPherson; the smaller Guanyin figure, Sotheby's London, 13th November 2003, lot 374.
Condition
These five figures are in very good condition, with the exception of:
Figure of Buddhist acolyte: two sections of restoration to the fly whisk and the top tip of the sash over his left shoulder; three short hairline firing cracks to the underside of the base which extend up slightly and are visible from the side; short hairline firing lines to his left knee, the front and back of his waist area and to the base; minor hairline glaze-firing lines and imperfections; and overall scratches to the glaze.
Figure of Zhenwu: a short hairline firing line to the underside of the base; two hairline cracks extending up from the base, one to the reverse on the left (approx 5cm) and the other to his right side, from the base to his knee (approx. 5.5cm); two short hairline firing lines to his collar and one to the end of his right sleeve; minor glazing imperfections; and very light overall surface scratching.
Figure of Damo: a hairline firing crack to his right side under his arm (approx. 3cm), and one to the underside of the base which extends slightly up and is visible from the side; short hairline firing lines to the back, his right shoulder and base; minor glazing imperfections; and light overall surface scratches.
Smaller figure of Guanyin: loss of thumb to her left hand and loss of tip of thumb to her right hand; loss of tip of the right tie around the scrolls and box; iron spot imperfections, including pin head-size iron spots to her right jaw, near her left foot, to the right of her chest, and on the sceptre; and very light surface scratches.
Larger Guanyin: loss of the tips of the middle and fourth fingers of her right hand and index, middle and pinkie fingers of her left hand; restoration to the index finger of her right hand; a hairline firing line to her neck and short clusters concentrated to the left side of her body; a hairline firing crack to her left forearm where it meets the robe; a pin head-size piece of kiln grit adhered to her back; and very light scratches to the surface.
