supported on a low foot, below the bulbous body molded on each lobe with a formal lotus design, the shoulder and waisted neck decorated with upright spearheads and pendant tendrils, the garlic-head surmounted by a short upright mouth, fitted with an ivory ring around the lip, of honey-chestnut color, Qianlong shang wan mark molded on the base

According to Regina Krahl in her discussion of a very similar vase (with Kangxi mark) in China: The Three Emperors, 1662-1795, the craft of growing gourds into decorative molds 'became of imperial interest under the Kangxi emperor who for that purpose had fields specially planted with gourd vines in the West Garden adjacent to the Forbidden City,' (London, 2005, pl. 164 and p. 428).
