A LARGE CINNABAR LACQUER 'NINE DRAGON' BOX AND COVER QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

exquisitely carved to the box and cover with nine writhing and scaly five-clawed dragons each in pursuit of a 'flaming pearl', the largest dragon depicted on the top of the cover amidst flames and scrolling clouds, reserved on a wave-diaper ground, encircled by a prominent keyfret border, the keyfret motif on the rims and the short straight foot, the interior and base lacquered black (2)

The box and cover were inspected under UV light, which showed no fluorescence, though there is some repainting to the cinnabar. The rim of the cover with two semi-circular restored chips, the longest 7/8 inch long. Three cracks to the black lacquer on the relacquered interior of the box, along with a small dent. The relacquered box with approximately four restored chips to the interior rim, the most significant 1 1/2 inches. The interior of the box with an almost circular crack following the foot beneath. Some small chips and cracks on the foot rim restored.
