A LARGE 'LONGQUAN' CELADON BARBED DISH YUAN / MING DYNASTY, 14TH / 15TH CENTURY

Description

of shallow form and thickly potted fluted sides corresponding to the everted rim molded with bracket lobes, all radiating from a plain circular well on the interior, thickly applied overall in a deep olive-green glaze pooling to a darker color in the recesses, an unglazed ring on the base burnt orange in the firing

Spink & Son, Ltd, London (until 1986).
Thereafter with the present owner.

Condition

In good overall condition with very minor iron spots on the interior and one pinholes. Negligible glaze chips on the foot ring. The surface of the interior is rubbed and slightly scratched from use.

Two dishes of this type, one slightly larger, are illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, London, 1986, vol. 1, pl. 245. A similarly sized dish from the Edward T. Chow collection was sold in our London rooms, 16th December 1980, lot 328. The same dish was later in the T.Y. Chao collection and was subsequently sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 18th November 1986, lot 27.
