Description

  • diameter 9 in. (22.8 cm), condition report available
the globular body decorated with two bands of stippled medallions in blue, amber, and cream divided by grooved borders reserved on a green ground, the whole supported on mask-and-paw feet

Provenance

Acquired on the Hong Kong art market, early 1980s.
Offered at Sotheby's New York, 17th September 2003, lot 55.

Condition

The censer was inspected under UV light, which showed fluorescence on two of the legs. The glaze appears very shiny and was possibly sprayed with a stabilizing substance perhaps to maintain some glaze degradation. One section of the rim, approximately 1 1/2 inches, has been repainted and is possible restoration. Another area emitting from the rim down to a foot comprises a restored Y-shaped crack, restored and sprayed. Smaller scattered areas of the rim and glaze with possible restoration. The unglazed base with some expected surface wear, showing two fine series of hairline cracks, the longest 1 3/4 inches. The colors are consistent with the catalogue illustration.
