Description

each body of archaic broad-shouldered baluster form rising from a high spreading foot to a short waisted neck with everted straight rim, finely carved around the exterior with four quatrefoil panels, alternately enclosing figures engaged in agriculture and scholars in a landscape, all reserved on a dense leafy lotus strapwork ground and within further lotus, ruyi and stiff leaf bands, the interior and base lacquered black

Condition

Both of these finely carved vases are in good overall condition with the exception of: left vase as illustrated in the catalogue; loss to the stick held by the farmer in the rice field, minor loss to the harness of the buffalo in the same panel, loss to the tips of the bamboo and line of foliage in another panel, loss of one 2mm., diam., jewel of the ground, a 4cm., and a 2.5cm., wide rim flake, light flaking to the red and black lacquer around the bottom edge and base of the foot, crazing to the black lacquer base, light rubbing to the red lacquer around the rims and minor scratches and rubbing around the body; right vase; a minor dent to the top right side of one panel of the body with an associated 6.5cm L-shaped crack to the rockwork and associated repair and a minor loss to the top section of the rock, and a 9cm., vertical body crack (1mm at widest), light flaking to the red and black lacquer around the bottom edge and base of the foot, crazing to the black lacquer base, light rubbing to the red lacquer around the rims and minor scratches and rubbing around the body.
