Description

the cylindrical two-tiered body rising from a short spreading foot and finely repoussed, the applied and chased decorated around the exterior with bands of linked quatrefoil panels enclosing flowers, fruit and seals, all reserved on a gilt punched ground, the domed cover decorated with a large cusped panel enclosing figures in a landscape, the base inscribed Shang Yi

Condition

This rare tiered box and cover is in very good overall condition with the exception of some light rubbing and softening to the definition of the raised decoration, light rubbing and loss to the gilding and some very minor nicks and dents to the extremities, some light scratches to the exterior and some scratching to the interior of both bases.

Compare a similarly decorated gilt-bronze box offered in our Paris rooms, 11th June 2009, lot 200, together with a gilt-bronze censer with related relief panels of decoration, sold in the same sale, lot 201. The inscription on the base, Shang Yi, may be a name.
