Catalogue Note

A closely related example was sold at Christie's New York, 24th February 1978, lot 111; and another, but with a wider incurved mouth, was sold in our New York rooms, 27th February 1981, lot 446. Compare also a white jade brushwasher of deep rounded peach-form, carved with a branch vaulting the mouth of the vessel and a bat on either side, from the Mrs. N.B. Pilcher Collection, sold in these rooms, 30th October 1987, lot 304; and a mottled grey and brown example, decorated with a similar gnarled leafy branch, sold at Christie's New York, 1st June 1990, lot 35.

The highly auspicious combination of peaches and bats represents the wish for blessings and longevity.
