Catalogue Note

First edition of Davenant's adaptation, with the 5-line imprint on the title.

Davenant's revival of Hamlet, the first production of the play to be staged after the Restoration, was notable for the appearances of Mary Saunderson and Ann Gibbs as Ophelia and Gertrude, the first appearance of identifiable actresses in Shakespearian leading roles. Pepys attended the opening and described it as "done with Scenes very well," reserving particular praise for Thomas Betterton as Hamlet "who did the Prince's part beyond imagination."

Two editions dated 1676 were printed by Clark for Martyn and Herrignman. These can be distinguished by the imprint, either 4- or 5-lines (as here). Bartlett does not assign priority, describing both as "sixth or seventh edition" but Greg assigns priority to the 4-line based on typographical evidence.
