8vo (6 3/8 x 4 ½ in.; 162 x 114 mm). Woodcut historiated title border, 182 woodcut text illustrations by Bernard Salomon; lightly browned, dampstains in upper and lower margins of a few quires, mended wormtrack in lower portion of quire p affecting a few letters. Antique vellum made from a seventeenth century legal document, manuscript title on spine.

Second edition, enlarged and revised.

"The first Protestant collection of religious devices, a book which played a very important role in the European emblem tradition" (Landwehr).

The first edition of 1551 contained only 118 devices and did not have accompanying explanatory text. This edition adds 64 new devices and makes changes to the mottoes of several devices, adding and explanation in French to the Latin caption of the first 118 and to the new devices.
