Catalogue Note

A fine set of Doppelmayr's constellation charts, with vivid, contemporary handcoloring.  The 6 charts are taken from Deppelmayr's Atlas coelestis, published by the heirs of Homann in 1742 (see previous lot). "Doppelmayr's charts appear to have been copied from those of Pardies (see lot 49), with the curious exception that Pardies's constellation figures, taken from Blaeu and ultimately based on Bayer, are replaced with figures modeled on those of Hevelius. So the Pardies crab molts into a Hevelius lobster, and the twins trade in their skullcaps for feathered caps" (Linda Hall). while Doppelmayr employed Hevelius's constellation images, he also relied on Pardies for the track of many historical comets and added comets that appeared since Pardies's time. In the area around Bootes's foot, for example (Pars IV), he has incorporated the comet of 1684 (observed by Bianchini) and the comet of 1706 (observed by Cassini). He has also planted Bootes's foot on Mons Mænalus, a new constellation introduced by Hevelius.
