4to (10 5/8  x 8 1/4  in.; 270 x 210 mm).  8 handcolored aquatint plates and 2 engraved maps by Sidney Hall; some browning and very light offsetting.  Contemporary tree calf; some wear, expertly rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated backstrip laid down.

Catalogue Note

First edition.  A very good copy of "a classic work on the North of Brazil .... The plates which illustrate Koster's book were executed according to his own drawings by a close relative.  In the appendix he transcribes two monographs, rare today, which appeared in Rio in 1810 written by Arruda Camara" (Borba de Moraes).
