4to (10 7/8 x 8 3/8 in.; 278 x 212 mm). Engraved portrait, engraved title vignette, 5 engraved folding maps, 10 engraved plates after the author's drawings, list of subscribers; title cropped at upper margin with loss of the first word "An" in title, leaf Cc4 cropped at fore-margin touching printed frame, mended fold-tear on verso of map of New South Wales, map of Botany Bay cropped along outer margin touching printed frame, occasional spotting a bit heavier on maps and a few plates. Nineteenth-century calf, triple-filleted borders with thistle tools gilt-stamped at four corners, spine gilt, dentelles; joints renewed, one corner mended.

Catalogue Note

First edition.
Hunter served as second in command to Governor Phillip on the Sirius, in the first convict fleet, and later succeeded Phillip as Governor of New South Wales, Included here is one of the earliest views of Sydney, after a sketch by Hunter dated 1788, showing the very modest settlement that had been founded in the previous year. The plate of a New South Wales family was engraved by William Blake after a sketch by Governor King.
