Catalogue Note

In this group of informative letters from the Delaunays, they discuss paintings they are working on, Sonia's textile designs for the department store Au Printemps, Robert's decorative designs for an Hispano Suiza  automobile, a planned exhibition of Robert's work at the Art Club of Chicago, a visit from the Museum of Modern Art's Alfred H. Barr, and other matters.  In the letter of 19 January 1936, Robert has included a pen-and-ink sketch of his 1934 painting, "Rhythms".

Also included here is a picture postcard of the legendary restaurant, La Closerie des Lilas.  A brief note by Robert Delaunay on the verso has been signed by both Delaunays, Mondrian, and others.  The picture depicts diners outside the café, and Mondrian has written in the names of several artists and drawn lines linking the name to anonymous diners. The names include his own, the Delaunays, Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner, Kandinsky, and one other.
