Description

A group of three works, first editions, by sporting author Frederic Tolfrey including the scarce Jones's Guide to Norway. Jones, a London fishing-tackle dealer, commissioned Tolfrey to provide the text. Jones's Guide is exceptional for the quality of color plates of salmon flies.

London: Henry Colburn, 1841. 2 vols., 8vo. 12 lithographed plates, publisher's advertisements dated January 1841; plates and title-pages foxed. Publisher's ribbed green cloth blocked in blind to a leafy pattern; spines lettered gilt; spines faded and spotted. Folding green cloth slipcase. — The Sportsman in Canada. London, T. C. Newby, 1845. 2 vols., 8vo.  10 lithographed plates. Modern half calf over marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt; joints lightly rubbed. Bookplate of Henry A. Sherwin. — Jones's Guide to Norway and Salmon Fisher's Pocket Companion. London: Long, Brown, Green, and Longman and J. Jones, 1848. 8vo. Lithographed frontispiece and pictorial title-page, letterpress title, 8 fine handcolored plates of flies; a few corners creased.  Modern half morocco over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt; short tear to marbled paper on upper board. Slipcase.
