Description
Engraved document, signed ("Go Washington") on vellum (18 3/8 x 14 3/4 in.; 466 x 375 mm) with engraved eagle as headpiece and a tailpiece of martial symbols "drawn and engraved by Thackara & Vallance, Philadelphia," accomplished in a clerical hand, Philadelphia, after 26 December 1794, being the appointment of Charles Harrison as Lieutenant in the "Corps of Artillerists and Engineers," countersigned by Henry Knox, Secretary of War, remains of a wax papered seal in upper right corner; formerly folded with soiled crease down center, tipped onto a board. Elaborately matted, glazed and framed with accompanying framed portrait photograph and reproduced views of Washington crossing the Deleware and of Mount Vernon, with brass plaque, on a Victorian carved walnut fire screen with a rectangular blue fielded panel and a gilt brass border flanked by two vertical spiral stiles each supported by a pair of ridged cabriole legs centering a turned drop-finial and terminating with pad feet, legs joined by a spiral cross stretcher.
