Description

  • A bird jar and cover
  • cover incised 'R.W Martin & Bro London & Southall', base incised 'MARTIN'

  • 26cm.;
  • 10¼in.
stoneware, modelled with a tonsure, finely detailed feet

Condition

A well modelled example with well defined details and good colour definition. The colour is less brown and has better contrast than suggested by the catalogue illustration. There are two manufacturing holes from the underside of the base through the legs of the bird where it originally would have been fixed to a wooden base. There are firing cracks to the underside of the jar which extend through the tail feathers. There is an area of somewhat crude restoration that is about 7x7.5cm and starts at the top of the jar and loops down the bird's back. Along the break are some glaze losses and chips. There are some small firing cracks to the underside of the beak. Some firing flaws visible to the interior of the head. The feather to the wings are picked out in light blue and blue.
