The Novelist's Magazine was published between 1780 and 1788 by Harrison and Co. The publication established the reputation of the artist Thomas Stothard and the engraver James Heath. this drawing, comprises the first of 148 illustrations produced by stothard for the novelist's magazine and represents a scene from Joseph Andrews (published in December 1780). A note on the reverse states 'The first drawing made by Stothard, for the Novelist's Magazine. It was done by desire of James Heath, to improve a design of Dodd's. Mr S. received 5 shillings for his trouble!'
