Description

  • The Horrible Heffalump: two drawings, comprising
i) Winnie-the-Pooh in bed dreaming of a Heffalump clutching a pot of honey, 113 by 86mm., unsigned; ii) Piglet in bed dreaming of a Heffalump chasing him, 110 by 145mm., signed with initials 'EHS' in lower left corner, Shepard's full signature and address on reverse; both ink drawings, mounted, framed and glazed with contemporary 'SG' [Sporting Gallery] label for number 174 in an exhibition on reverse, browning below mount



these original ink drawings comprise the only two drawings of heffalumps by e.h. shepard. It is thought that these two drawings have not been offered for sale since the original Sporting Gallery exhibition. Reproduced in Winnie-the-Pooh (Methuen, 1926) on page 62 and page 65, from the chapter 'In which Piglet meets a Heffalump'.
