Description

  • The Father's Blessing Penn'd for the Instruction of his Children. Containing Godly and Delightful Verses, Riddles, Fables... to allure Children to Read. for G. Conyers, [c.1712]

Carpenter and Pritchard note that 'the book, most of which is in rhymed couplets, included a verse alphabet; it was more cheerful than the usual Puritan books of the period, and contained much that was simply intended to amuse...' (Oxford Companion to Children's Literature, Oxford, 1984). The work by Jole is complete but has been bound with the conclusion of another work (incomplete but with sequential signatures following the Jole). The work is apprently rare with only one copy offered at auction in over thirty years.
