Kerouac discusses his finances ("...I'm in San Luis Obispo...I won't make much more than $80 this end-of-the-month but things will start rolling in May, and by Christmas I;ll have $2,000 saved, or bust..."), invites his mother to come and live with him, honouring his deathbed promise to his father to care for her ("...The best idea I think will be for us to start in a trailer, for about a year, till we get a start...One thing sure, -- California is beautiful and ideal and will be our home..."), writes of his and Cassady's recent illnesses and injuries ("...for 3 days my eyes watered with migraine pain from that swollen schnozzola..."), his great love for California, even in modest surroundings ("...Ma, I have a great little hotel room, $6 a week; I cook steaks, eggs, toast, coffee...The sun is warm, the birds sing in my window; at night I curl up & get a good sleep to the tune of crickets.
