folio (424 x 257mm.),  2 volumes, first edition, titles printed in red and black, contemporary calf, red specked edges, gilt dentelles, spines gilt,  rebacked, neat repairs to corners, slight worm hole to lower margin of last few leaves of volume 2, neat repair to margin of  20E2, type slightly faint on pages 20F1 verso and 20F2 recto in volume 2  (duplicate leaves from another copy also bound in)



A near fine copy of the first great endeavour of English lexicography, the standard authority on the language for 150 years, and one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship of all time.
