Catalogue Note
Caldwell (1907-2000), rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral and position of Medical Director-General of the Royal Navy. A letter from Downing St to Caldwell (a copy of which is included with the lot) returning the photograph after its second signature makes it clear that the 1955 signature was a duplicate, presumably because the first signature had by then faded. The military figures standing behind the two leaders are: Admiral Ernest King, General George Marshall, Field Marshall Sir John Dill, Admiral Harold Stark, and Admiral Dudley Pound.
