Description

  • Series of 16 typed letters or notes and 3 typed postcards, to Woods Gray
written in Pound's inimitable late style providing statements of his artistic principles ("Art is not something on a production line" and "If those who CAN distinguish a bit of reality etc do NOTHING the Eliots and Martinellis will NOT get printed...") Pound warns against writing criticism ("you can't write to a theme you do NOT believe... at least THAT is not proper practice...") and suggests critical topics ("you might at least deplore in print the illiteracy of N.Y. reporters who do not recognize the difference between E.P.'s prose style and that of the late Wyndham Lewis as manifest in Blast...") Pound notes the effect of Browning ("London was bearable and more than that in 1908 because Browning had smacked some people over the head...") and states that, in conversations with Joyce, the topic of Browning "entered our discourse... on... rare occasions..." An early postcard presumably provides a statement of Pound's current interests ("nothing short of a serious study of history[,] an interest in human society as such and an active participation in circulating ideas") before adding "2 c[ents] postage probably wasted". The correspondence appears to have terminated when Pound turns on Gray and states "You W.G. being one of those self-centred asses who never think of anything save in what it GETS for you, are NOT worth postage. You never think of being of the faintest use or interest to anyone else... You don't even supply news of La. In y[ou]r pustulent mewlings..."; one postcard signed ("E Pound") and three letters initialled, 20 pages, 15 envelopes, various sizes, [mostly Washington, D.C.], 1955 - 1958, tears to envelopes
