Description

  • Two early manuscripts:
(i) Autograph manuscript with drawings, entitled "Christmas Booklet", signed "Sylvia Plath" , 9 illustrated leaves (267x  200mm.), preserved in grey cardboard folder (303 x 228mm.) containing an initial thank-you letter to "Aunt Frieda", dated 26 December 1944 [when the poet was aged 12] ("I can't thank you enough for the lovely tooled leather diary you sent me.  I kept my diary every day last year, but it was not as beautiful as this new one..."), an illustrated title page with a candle and holly branches, a colourful and elaborate frontispiece illustration of two children pressed against the elements and a Christmas tree, a selection from "The Waits", an autograph poem "Earth and Sky", a short story "The Bookland Carpet", and another poem "Christmas Morning" , all illustrated; (ii) Autograph pencil manuscript, 11 leaves in a hand-made stapled booklet (110 x 85mm.), entitled "The Treasures of Sylvia Plath" on upper wrapper, each leaf a small form with printed text "Treasure Club 1945" [when the poet was aged 13], then Sylvia Plath's pencil notes of each book title and "treasures" or maxims from each work; both items specially mounted and preserved in marbled paper covered folder, reddish-brown chemise and matching quarter morocco slipcase

two evocative pieces of plath juvenilia, touching on her diary-keeping (which began from a very young age, and continued throughout her life) and her reading as an adolescent.
