expressing her views on other writers, her career, and the literary world, including the manuscript market ("the underworld of literature") and possible sale of her 120-volume manuscript diary ("...I took pleasure in its presence, the different note books, gifts, de luxe, or shabby..."), her reputation ("...America is 'discovering' me -- What I accepted philosophically (America's indifference) only hurt me because it influenced Europe...") and the importance of "recognition in the lifetime of the artist" ("...it is necessary. For it is...his love affair with the world..."), Aldous Huxley and drugs ("...the drug, as he said to me once, was the artifical way to open worlds he had no access to by intuition or lyricism..."), Lawrence Durrell's women, Tennesse Williams, Henry Miller ("...20 years later I can't read the books he writes, nor believe in him...the only quality Miller affirms which this generation does not have, is vitality..."), and nostalgia for pre-war France; and in her last letter confessing to having sold first editions which Denis Segal had sent her for an exhibition; 19 pages in all, 4to and small folio, mostly New York, 22 March 1961 to 8 March 1968, some creasing
