Description
- Two autograph short stories:
the first entitled 'Delilah and Mr Bircumshaw', with alternative titles crossed through ('The Mollification of...' and 'The Clipping of Mr Bircumshaw'), and several deletions and revisions, complete in 15 numbered pages, 4to, on lined paper, attached with string at top corner, frayed at edges (no loss); the second entitled 'Laura Philippine', with several deletions and revisions, signed by Lawrence at the end, 4 numbered pages, 4to, frayed at edges, minor tears, one repaired with tape (no loss)
An early manuscript fragment of 'Delilah and Mr Bircumshaw' at the Bancroft Library has been dated to c.1909-10. Lawrence revised the story in 1912-13, but it first appeared in print in The Virginia Quarterly Review for Spring 1940. The present manuscript may be the one found in the desk drawer of Gerald Duckworth and returned to Frieda Lawrence by Curtis Brown (see Love Among the Haystacks and Other Stories, ed. J. Worthen, 1987, p.xlvi).
Both manuscripts were given to Christine Hughes by Frieda, and are accompanied by four letters by her, including one to Mary Christine Hughes, the original of 'Laura Philippine': "...I am sending your mother the Mss of 'Laura Phillipine'. I remember so well, when Lawrence came back from a visit to you in Rome and sat, chuckling to himself, writing this sketch. He had a great time writing it -- I like it so much...".
'Laura Philippine' first appeared in T.P.'s Weekly for 7 July 1928. Both stories were reprinted in Phoenix II: Uncollected, Unpublished, and Other Prose Works by D.H. Lawrence, eds. W Roberts & H.T. Moore (New York, 1959).

From the collection of Christina Hughes, a Santa Fe intimate of the American poet Wittner ("Hal") Bynner (with whom D.H. and Frieda Lawrence stayed on their first arrival in New Mexico in 1922), and subsequent friend of the Lawrences themselves
