  • A Marble Pillar Fragment with Snail and Snake amidst Vegetation
  • 18 1/2 by 6 5/8 by 3 3/4 in. 47 by 16.8 by 9.5 cm.
carved in relief with an ivy vine on one side and grapevine with clusters of grapes, a snail, and a snake on the other, each short side ornamented with a thyrsos shaft covered in overlapping leaves.

Dr. Dietrich Kötzsche (d. 2008), Wannsee (Berlin), acquired in the 1950s
acquired by the present owner at auction in Germany in 2008

Condition

As shown, note weathered area by top left corner, all edges extensively chipped, back weathered, small chips and scratches overall.
