Description

  • A Marble Relief Panel with Dionysos and Ariadne
  • 11 1/4 by 15 3/4 in. 28.6 by 40 cm.
carved with Dionysos and Ariadne riding to right in a lion-drawn chariot, Ariadne seated on the god's lap with her right arm around his shoulders, holding a thyrsos in her right hand, and wearing a mantle draped over her lower body, a dolphin head emerging from behind her knee, the elaborately decorated chariot led by a putto and accompanied by Pan holding a thyrsos and billowing drapery, a flute player with long hair bound in a fillet, and a striding nude youth looking back and carrying a staff; mounted in a 19th Century Scandinavian wood frame.

Condition

As shown. The marble slab is approx. 1" thick. Area encompassing part of the base and the legs of the Putto have some evident repair and possible minor restoration. Note the adjacent flaking on the hind leg of the lion. Various chips, cracks and flaws in the stone. Missing early restorations on the face of the youth at right and the head of Dionysus.
