Catalogue Note
Linnell executed this watercolour during his summer tour of Hertford and Derbyshire of 1814. It might be suggested that he has depicted himself sketching in this composition. Linnell had been commissioned by the publisher Samuel Bagster (1772-1851) to provide illustrations for a revised edition of Isaac Walton and Charles Cotton's Compleat [sic] Angler, which had first been published as early as 1653. Other examples of watercolours from this tour can be seen in Katharine Crouan, John Linnell, A Centennial Exhibtion, 1982, p. 11-12, cat. no. 30-31.
