Condition

The watercolour is in good condition. The colours have remained fresh although the paper has perhaps discoloured very slightly. Around the extreme edges of the sheet there is a thin brown line, again associated with previous mounting.

Catalogue Note

The river Thames remained a favourite subject for John Varley throughout his forty year painting career. The view point of this present work appears to be looking north from Barnes across the river to Chiswick. The prominent church in the centre of the composition is St. Nicholas Church, Chiswick.
