Condition
The medium is in good condition. The sheet has discoloured very slightly, but this can only be seen on very close inspection. There are several minor foxmarks, which can be seen in the catalogue illustration. The work has not been laid down.

Catalogue Note
This recently discovered drawing probably dates to the 1740s or early 1750s. The composition, together with the use of two types of graphite, relates to a similar work in the Pierpont Morgan Library Collection, New York dated circa 1746. It would appear likely that these two drawings are of the same date.
Examination of the paper shows half of the Dutch watermark, Vyrheit (Liberty). We are grateful to Peter Bower for identifying this and pointing out that the same watermark has been found in other drawings and letters by Gainsborough, including Two ladies walking seen from behind (Private Collection).
