Catalogue Note

Daniel Gardner was a portrait painter in both pastel and oils. Born in Kendal, Cumbria, he received drawing lessons from George Romney (1734-1802), before moving to London in 1762. He joined the Royal Academy schools in 1770 and won a silver metal for drawing in 1773. Despite a successful career he only exhibited once at the Royal Academy. In circa 1776 he married Ann Haward, with whom he had two children.
