Catalogue Note

A fleeting glance at the work of Halley Cheng culminates in a conundrum.  What appears to be a semblance of a Tang fan painting is actually a work of ball pen and pencil on Western medium.  Using such unexpected materials, Cheng conveys the lyricism of traditional Chinese ink paintings.  Imitating Tartar Pipe Eighteen Beats No. 2—Going to the North & No. 9 – Writing (Lot 610) is based on the famed Eastern Han poem by Cai Wenji that delineates his exile in the hinterland of Xiongnu.
